Key Employment Figures, January 2017

Here are the key employment figures for January 2017 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  • Nonfarm payroll employment: +227,000
  • Unemployment rate: 4.8%, mostly unchanged
  • Unemployed persons: 7.6 million, mostly unchanged
  • Job gain sectors: Retail Trade, Construction, and Financial Activities.

  • Employment in food services: +30,000, added 286,000 jobs over the past 12 months
  • Employment in retail trade: +46,000, added 229,000 jobs over the past 12 months

Employment in other major industries showed little change over the month. (mining and logging, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, information, and government)
